The amazonian department of Madre de Dios is famous because of the wealth of its protected areas. Its capital, Puerto Maldonado, is located in the confluence of the Madre de Dios and tambopata rivers.
Puerto Maldonado is the transit point to entrance by river, into the Reserved Zone Tambopata Candamo.
The capital has a warm and humid climate; the average maximum annual temperature is 26°C (77 ºF) and the minimum 8°C (24 ºF). The rainy season is between December and March.
